Romana II at Time Fest New Orleans

I am a big Doctor Who fan and I love to attend Comic Con Conventions. I have done a few cosplays but never any that I had to sew. When I discovered Romanadvoratrelundar (Romana for short) I knew I had to create something.

For those that don't know anything about Doctor Who it features a Time Lord, known as the Doctor, as he travels in time and space helping people with his companions. Romana (Lalla Ward) was is a Time Lady that traveled with the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) for a short time in the older serials of who. Typically the Doctor is male and the companion is female. None of the companions really spoke to me except for Romana.



One of the easier costumes she has worn is the ensemble above and that's what I chose to create. It consisted of a blue striped skirt, red waistband, lacy shirt, and a small blue hat with cherries and flowers on top.

I was really picky about the fabric I wanted to use. To be honest I never thought I would find something I liked. When I finally found it I was relieved. I've made skirts previously so it was quite easy to work up.

When it came to the shirt, I found one at a thrift store that worked perfectly so I didn't need to make one. The belt was a bit more difficult. I couldn't find anything large enough so I ended up using a piece of fabric that was stretchy. If I was to wear it again, I think I would make an actual belt and not wrap it around my waist.

My next task was to create the hat. This I actually built out of felt. I glued a red ribbon around the center and had the ends cascade down the back just like Romanas. Then I bought some small flowers and cherries and also glued the to the hat. Finally all I had to add was red flats and red stockings.

And voila! A very easy Time Lady costume! This one was fun because not many people cosplay as Romana II. Plus who doesn't want the power to fly through time and space???

I started this kirtle back in August 2017 after being successful in making my first historical-ish costume for the Jane Austen Festival. I was hoping that I would get done before my classes started at the end of August so I could wear it to the Renaissance Festival in September but that didn't happen. 2017 Jane Austen Festival

The Jane Austen Festival in Kentucky was wonderful! I live in Columbus OH so it was a three hour drive down to Locust Grove. I went on a Saturday (The festival runs Friday through Sunday). I didn't attend the other days or the ball on Saturday night because I had only sewn one dress. I could have worn regular clothes for the other days (not the ball) but it's not in my nature to do that, lol. Locust Grove, KY The house at Locust Grove is beautiful! It was originally founded in 1790 on 55 acres of land by William Croghan and his wife Lucy Corghan. Lucy Corghan was actually the sister of the famous William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. In 1806 the expedition was heading back towards the east coast and the Croghans held a homecoming to celebrate the event. Katniss Everdeen Wedding Dress Photo by Rick Heno Photography Sketch of the costume In 2015 I saw the previews for Catching Fire and fell in love with the wedding dress Katniss wears and I knew I had to recreate it for Halloween. But, to be honest, I didn't know how to go about doing it. I knew that I didn't want to make the entire dress myself, so I headed to the thrift store and found a strapless wedding dress that fit me for about $20. Next, I went about figuring out how to do the metal working on the dress. I studied the one photo I had (which was only shown in the movie previews) and tried to figure out what it looked like most to me. Working with limited photos was a drawback but I think having the limited resources forced me to be more creative. My form of creativity was using pipe cleaners and tin foil!
